Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced an increase in the minimum wage for state workers to N85,000, surpassing the N70,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government in July, News About Nigeria reports.
This announcement was made during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday.
Sanwo-Olu said that the decision to set the minimum wage at N85,000 was not a matter of competition with other states but rather a reflection of Lagos State’s financial capacity.
“I am glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we conversed and discussed with our union, is N85,000 today,” he stated.
He acknowledged the higher cost of living in Lagos, saying, “We know too well that when people live in Lagos, Lagos has a premium in terms of even the cost of living.”
The governor also mentioned that the state had previously increased workers’ salaries earlier this year.
He expressed his ambition to further raise the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025, stating, “I would like to come back to you in January to say I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to N100,000… I want my people to have a living wage; I want them to really be able to know that government is working for them.”
In addition to discussing wage increases, Sanwo-Olu shared his vision for a more efficient Lagos.
He hopes to create a city that works for everyone, aiming for predictable travel times across the city.
“The dream identity will be a Lagos that truly works for everyone, a Lagos where you can have predictable journey time,” he said.
