3 Kwara Police Officers Dismissed, Face Charges For Killing Polytechnic Student

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed it will pursue legal action against three officers found responsible for the alleged killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student at Kwara State Polytechnic.

Ishola, a 21-year-old Electrical Electronics Engineering student, reportedly lost his life during a police stop-and-search on September 4, 2024, in Ilorin’s Fate area.

This incident started protests among students, who demanded justice and an investigation.

According to a statement from DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, spokesperson for the Kwara State Police, the three officers, identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, were found guilty of misconduct after an internal inquiry.

Their offences included abandoning their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and using unnecessary force, leading to their dismissal on October 4, 2024. 

The statement mentioned that these officers would soon be tried in a court of competent jurisdiction.

He stated, “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to provide an important update regarding the investigation into the tragic incident involving the loss of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola on 4th September 2024.

“After a thorough investigation and an internal disciplinary trial, the three officers involved—AP/No 233828 INSPR. Abiodun Kayode, AP/No 287410 INSPR. James Emmanuel, and F/No 497868 SGT. Oni Philip—has been found guilty of the following offences: 1. leaving beat; 2. corrupt practices; 3. unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.

“Consequently, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective from 4th October 2024. They will be arraigned in court as soon as possible.”

Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya conveyed condolences to Ishola’s family and urged the public to have faith in the legal process, assuring them that justice would prevail.
