The Ondo State Government has ordered the evacuation of residents in flood-affected areas and has initiated rapid response measures to prevent further damage, News About Nigeria reports.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Oyeniyi Oseni.
According to the statement, the government has put necessary systems in place to avert future floods. “Amphibious excavators have been deployed to key erosion-prone areas across the state for dredging,” Oseni noted.
He attributed the recent flooding in some parts of the state to developments along waterways, particularly in an estate at Fagun and areas along Ife Road.
The commissioner further stated that his ministry would collaborate with other government agencies to address illegal developments obstructing the natural flow of water.
The flooding, which occurred on Friday, caused huge damage to properties worth millions of naira in several parts of Ondo town, including Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and the Akure-Ondo Expressway.
Heavy rainfall lasting for several hours left houses and vehicles submerged, forcing many residents to evacuate.
Fortunately, no loss of life was reported.
In a related development, the University of Ibadan (UI) also experienced severe flooding that caused extensive damage.
Books, foodstuffs, and other essential materials were destroyed after floodwaters submerged parts of the institution, including several student hostels.
Investigations revealed that Awo Hall was one of the hardest-hit areas, with 16 rooms on the underground floor completely submerged.
A student who wished to remain anonymous said, “The flood destroyed everything, including documents and property of students who were away for examinations.”
Another source added, “The flood took over rooms, toilets, kitchens, and even the entrances to the hostel, leaving students’ belongings floating in the water.”
The state government assured residents that it is working tirelessly to prevent future occurrences and mitigate the impact of such disasters.
