The Imo State Police Command announced on Wednesday that it has arrested over eight suspects in connection with the arson attack on the National Open University (NOUN) study centre in Eze Oke Nsu, located in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, shared this update with journalists in Owerri, saying, “I am pleased to announce that over eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson incidents in Ehime Mbano. Investigations are ongoing. More details will be communicated in due course.”
The attack was allegedly sparked by rumours that the NOUN centre would be used to house internally displaced persons (IDPs), leading to unrest in the community.
Since the incident, tension has escalated in the affected areas, with residents fearing the possibility of further attacks.
A local community leader from Nsu, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, called for increased security, saying, “It is crucial that security agencies establish checkpoints, especially on roads leading to the Ehime Mbano Council. People in my community haven’t slept since Tuesday night. We are scared. This situation must be taken seriously.”
Another community leader, a former President-General of a neighbouring area, also urged security agencies to collaborate with local vigilante groups, stating, “Security agencies must now work with the local security outfit to protect not just Nsu but all communities within the Ehime council area. We must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent further attacks.”
The police investigation into the arson attack is ongoing, with authorities promising to release more details as they become available.
