The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Nigerians to prioritise mutual understanding and respect, News About Nigeria reports.

The association’s president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made this call in his message congratulating Nigerians on celebrating the country’s 64th year of gaining independence on Tuesday, 1st of October 2024.

He noted that prioritising religious tolerance is a sure way of moving the country forward, adding that the citizens should also engage in peaceful coexistence.

He also emphasised the importance of reflecting on the nation’s journey, celebrating achievements, and recommitting to the ideals of peace and harmony.

He further expressed a vision for sustainable growth through focused national development, including infrastructure and youth empowerment, and collaborations.

He stated, “Despite the challenges that have tested our resolve, we continue to demonstrate resilience and a shared commitment to the common good.

“Embrace peaceful coexistence and work collaboratively to build a future marked by mutual respect and understanding.

“By prioritising education and creating employment opportunities, we empower our youth and lay the groundwork for a prosperous future.

“We commend the efforts of our security forces in safeguarding our nation. However, we must remain vigilant and continue to support initiatives that promote safety and security for all Nigerians.

“As we celebrate our independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to mutual understanding and mutual respect,” he said, emphasising the importance of valuing religious diversity.

“Together, we can overcome the challenges before us and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage.

“May God guide us towards lasting peace and prosperity.”
