Edo State has commenced its governorship election today, News About Nigeria reports.

The election process began at about 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, and citizens of the state have trooped out to cast their votes, which is a deciding factor on who will take over the reins of leadership in the state.

Security personnel have also mounted guards in various parts of the state, to ensure peace and order is maintained throughout the voting period.

It was gathered that security personnel mounted roadblocks on roads in Benin as early as 6:00 a.m., and began stopping and searching vehicles at the roadblocks, as well as asking the occupants questions in order to ensure security, law, and order during the election.

Recall that necessary steps have been taken by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to beef up security in the State.

The Defence Corps deployed 6,433 officers and men ahead of the election, to support operatives of the Edo State Police Command.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also urged the candidate and electorates to respect the process of democracy and cooperate with relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the election is credible, free and fair.

Today’s Edo governorship election has panned out as a three-horse race between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s Dr Asue Ighodalo; the All Progressives Congress, APC’s Senator Monday Okpebholo, both from Edo Central; and Labour Party, LP’s Mr. Olumide Akpata, Edo South.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, 2.249 million voters collected their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs.
