Ahead of the Edo state governorship election which is slated for Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced the airlifting of election materials for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Benin, the Edo state capital.

The airlifting of the material was made public in a statement by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Kabiru Ali, on Wednesday.

In the statement, Ali noted that the move by NAF is part of its effort to ensure that the materials are on ground early enough before the election day to ensure that voting commences on time on Saturday.

He also added that the airlifting is also done to secure the delivery of sensitive materials, which is necessary for the smooth conduct of the elections.

He said, “The airlift operation demonstrates the collaboration between NAF and INEC, aimed at facilitating logistics and ensuring a peaceful election process in Edo State.”

News About Nigeria earlier reported that the INEC on Tuesday assured Nigerians and the people of Edo State of the commission’s readiness to conduct the election.

The election body had also announced that out of 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo State, 2,249,780 Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) have been collected.

In a statement, INEC said, “Nigerians may recall that the Commission recently announced that the total number of registered voters in Edo State is 2,629,025. Of this figure, 2,249,780 (85.57 per cent) have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards, while 379,245 (14.43 per cent) of the PVCs remain uncollected as of the end of the extended period for PVC collection on Sunday, 15 September 2024.”
