The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced the death of one person and eight injured in a road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge.
News About Nigeria reports that this is contained in a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson of LASTMA, on Monday in the state.
According to the statement, the crash occurred when two Mazda commercial buses, with number plates LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, recklessly engaged in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele.
The spokesperson noted that the intervention of the LASTMA officials facilitated the rapid rescue of eight passengers, all of whom suffered severe fractures.
He stated that this serves as a reminder of the catastrophic consequences of irresponsible driving practices.
“The injured were immediately transported to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care, courtesy of the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS),” the statement reads.
“Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations were instrumental in providing critical security support during the rescue operation, ensuring order and expediting the efforts to restore normalcy.”
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to road safety and urges drivers to obey speed limits, adding that it offers sympathy to the grieving family and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
In a separate incident, LASTMA reported a Honda CRV overturned on Third Mainland Bridge near Unilag waterfront due to excessive speeding; fortunately, there were no casualties.
The agency said its personnel rapidly removed the wreckage, maintaining smooth traffic flow on the bridge.
In April, David Umahi, minister of works, directed Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of works in Lagos, to open the bridge for vehicular movement after weeks of rehabilitation work.
