Five people have reportedly lost their lives in a fatal road crash on the Warrake-Afuze road in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, News About Nigeria reports.

It was gathered that the accident involved a campaign vehicle of Monday Okpebholo, the Edo governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and a private vehicle.

The victims were said to be returning from a burial ceremony when they met their untimely deaths. One among them was identified as Emmanuel Edionwe.

The campaign vehicle crashed into the victims’ silver Camry Sedan while negotiating a sharp bend, resulting in four bodies being deposited at Edo State University’s mortuary.

The Edo State Sector Commander, Matthew Cyril Zango, confirmed the accident.

He clarified that two people died, contradicting earlier social media reports that claimed five fatalities in the tragic incident.

Zango said the APC campaign vehicles were travelling from Auchi to Afuze.

He said one of the vehicles, Thunder, carrying musical equipment, rammed into the silver Camry Sedan travelling from Afuze while trying to negotiate a bend on the road.

“Two of the occupants of the car who were said to be returning from a burial ceremony lost their lives in the crash.”

He said he was yet to get further updates on the accident from the Afuze unit commander of the FRSC.

Earlier, the Edo FRSC commander announced that its men have rescued six and recovered two bodies after a bus plunged into the Ovia River.

The commander said that divers had been contacted to recover the passengers trapped in the river.
