The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced that the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch has recorded success against terrorism, News About Nigeria reports.

The NAF said its operatives neutralised at least 28 insurgents in a precision airstrike in Niger’s Shiroro Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Thursday by Captain Kabiru Ali, NAF’s deputy director of public relations and information, the operation was carried out on Wednesday.

The statement said the airstrike was targeted at criminal elements wreaking havoc on communities in the area.

“After confirming the positions of friendly troops, the NAF conducted precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ positions,” the statement reads.

“The mission targeted terrorists in Bassa, upon receipt of a request for air support from friendly forces in the area.

“The strikes were devastating, neutralising dozens of terrorists in successive passes.

“As of the time of reporting, 28 bodies had been recovered from the target area, with several more terrorists, weapons, and burnt motorcycles still being cleared.

“Nigerians can be assured that NAF will continue to conduct air operations, both independently and in collaboration with surface forces.

“This is to eliminate all threats to the peace, prosperity, and security of our great nation.”

Ali added that the successful operation underscored the NAF’s commitment to protecting the nation and supporting sister services and other security agencies in combating banditry, terrorism, insurgency, and all other forms of criminality.

The Shiroro local government in Niger State has been a hotspot for banditry activities, with the military withdrawing its forces from the area after multiple attacks on troops by bandits in the local government.
