The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi has issued a caution notice to motorists in the state.
News About Nigeria reports that the FRSC warned its officers against indolence and extortion of motorists on the highways.
Speaking at the commencement of a workshop for heads of operations on Thursday, Samuel Oyedeji, the FRSC sector commander in Kogi, said defaulters will face the full weight of the law.
The workshop was held at the command’s head office in Lokoja.
Oyedeji warned that any officer found wanting in his or her duty would be severely dealt with by the corps’ rules and even face dismissal to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We are in Kogi as officers and men of the corps to serve diligently; and that we must put at the back of our minds.
“Any act that could tarnish our image as a corps should be avoided and we should rather project the FRSC in good light before the public,” he said.
He said that the safety of travellers on the highways should be paramount to the corps and urged officers to be proactive in reaching out during road accidents.
On August 30, Shehu Mohammed, the corps marshal of the FRSC, directed an immediate clampdown on the transportation of flammable substances like petroleum products across the country.
The corps marshal said FRSC operatives should embark on an awareness campaign for drivers and passengers on the dangers of carrying petroleum products in vehicles.
He also directed the deployment of patrol operatives on highways to conduct searches and identify vehicles carrying such products.
