Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has revealed that the state’s new 6,000-capacity arena will be named in honour of Afrobeats superstar, Rema.
Rema, who was in town for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, joined the governor at the ceremony and laid the first block of what will be known as “Rema’s Dome.”
Governor Obaseki expressed his excitement about having the global music icon at the event, sharing on social media, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”
The governor stated that the arena is expected to host a wide range of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other significant gatherings.
He said that the facility would serve as a magnet for visitors to Edo State, showcasing the region’s rich culture and creating job opportunities for the local youth.
He further explained that the Rema Dome would allow visitors to “experience our rich culture and what we have to offer, which will create employment opportunities for our youths.”
Governor Obaseki reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to attracting investment into the state by boosting tourism.
News About Nigeria reported that Rema received a hero’s welcome as he arrived in Benin City ahead of his much-anticipated homecoming concert.
Drummers, dancers, and enthusiastic fans thronged the Benin Airport to greet the “Ozeba” hitmaker, who has kept his promise to return to his hometown for the event.
Rema’s record label, Mavin, shared a video of his arrival on social media, captioning it: “Benin, your illustrious son; The Prince of Afrobeats—Rema is Home!”
The concert is set to take place on August 30 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, an event that Rema first announced in July.
Governor Godwin Obaseki had previously planned to host Rema in December 2023, but the event was postponed due to health concerns.
Now, the stage is set for the Afrobeats star to perform in his hometown, fulfilling a long-awaited promise to his fans.
