President Bola Tinubu has praised Coach Rena Wakama for being named the best women’s basketball coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

News About Nigeria reports that this recognition highlights her exceptional leadership skills and commitment to excellence.

The President’s spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, released a statement commending the team, coach, and everyone involved in their historic achievement.

The President encouraged them to stay focused and determined, striving for even greater success.

President Tinubu emphasized that winning is the ultimate goal in competitive sports, but it’s equally important to demonstrate good sportsmanship, discipline, and sacrifice.

The statement said these values are essential for those representing Nigeria on the global stage.

The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, made history by becoming the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.

President Tinubu thanked the team and wished them continued success in their endeavors.

In a distinct development, John Enoh, minister of sports development, says Ese Ukpeseraye was without an approved track bike for the Keirin cycling at the 2024 Paris Olympics because Nigeria’s participation at the event came on short notice.

On Thursday, Ukpeseraye claimed she had to borrow a bike from the German team to compete in the Keirin cycling event that was held on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old said her participation in the event was impromptu, and she had to improvise.

The revelation triggered negative reactions on social media among Nigerians, who criticised the ministry of sports for the lapse.

Reacting to the situation, Enoh said the cyclist’s post was “grossly misunderstood” and “proper context” is needed.

The minister said Nigeria had qualified for only one event and “was fully prepared for this road race”
