The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission says local government area elections will be held on November 16, 2024.
The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed this in a statement signed by him and made available to journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
News About Nigeria reports that the commission has set August 8, 2024, as the date for releasing the electoral guidelines and holding a stakeholders’ meeting, with political campaigns slated to begin on August 9, 2024.
“The political parties are also scheduled to hold their party primaries between Monday, August 26 and Monday, September 9, 2024.”
The governor’s aide, Kayode Akinmade, had previously debunked a social media rumour that claimed the local government elections would take place on October 26, 2024.
This clarification came after a false statement began circulating online.
Meanwhile, the current local government officials have just recently concluded their terms, having served out their tenure.
The timing of the upcoming elections has been a subject of speculation, but the authorities have now confirmed the actual date.
On July 11, the Supreme Court declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold funds allocated for local government administrations.
The seven-man panel, in the judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, declared that the 774 local government councils in the country should manage their funds themselves.
The apex court held that the power of the government is portioned into three arms of government: the federal, the state, and the local government.
The court further declared that a state government has no power to appoint a caretaker committee and a local government council is only recognisable with a democratically elected government.
