A former Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, and Prophet Isa El-Buba led a protest in Jos, dubbed “End Bad Governance,” which began on Thursday.
The protest, largely comprising youths, marched through major streets in Jos, chanting solidarity songs.
News About Nigeria understands that the organisers had announced that the protest would continue from August 1 to 10.
Dalung explained that the protest aimed to demand good governance from the government, citing widespread poverty, hunger, and a high cost of living.
He said that the protesters sought to peacefully call attention to the country’s challenges.
Prophet El-Buba, convener of the Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), urged President Bola Tinubu to implement measures to end corruption and bad governance.
He framed the protest as a fight for Nigeria’s future and its descendants, emphasising the need for good governance.
El-Buba envisioned a Nigeria with effective institutions, where hunger and killings would cease, and the armed forces could serve the people.
He pledged to continue the protest until positive change was achieved, stressing the importance of securing Nigeria’s future.
The prophet expressed a desire for a Nigeria where religion and tribalism would not be used to manipulate citizens.
He recalled a past in Nigeria where citizens were united, education was government-funded, and jobs awaited graduates.
This, he said, was the kind of Nigeria they sought to reclaim.
Elbuba told the protesters that they wanted a Nigeria, where nobody would use religion or tribalism to seduce or manipulate Nigerians.
According to him, they were going to mobilise more for the remaining nine days of the protest.
“I grew up in Nigeria, where we were known as Nigerians instead of our individual tribes. I grew up in Nigeria, where going to school from primary to university was taken care of by the government.
“Then, before you graduate, a job is waiting for you, and that is the kind of Nigeria we want,” he said.
