The organisers of the nationwide protest movements #DaysOfRage and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria have formally requested permission to use Eagle Square in Abuja for their planned demonstrations.
The protests are scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, and continue through August 10, with the possibility of an extension depending on the issues being addressed.
The request, addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, comes as the organisers, led by the Take It Back Movement (TIB), seek to express grievances related to governance issues in Nigeria.
In a letter signed by Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for TIB, the group requested unrestricted access to Eagle Square, stating that it needs venue that can accommodate continuous protest activities, including provisions for power, sanitation, and security.
The letter further mentioned that the protest might extend beyond the initially planned ten days due to unresolved issues attributed to the ruling party.
The organisers also requested that protesters be treated with the same respect and facilities provided to dignitaries who have previously used the space.
Meanwhile, News About Nigeria reported that Wike advised residents of the FCT not to participate in the protests.
During a press briefing following the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja, Wike announced that the date had been set aside for the chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to present certificates of recognition to traditional rulers.
Consequently, Wike stated that Eagle Square would not be available for protest activities on that day, encouraging residents to focus on celebrations instead.
