British rapper Stormzy and Love Island presenter Maya Jama have officially announced their breakup, News About Nigeria reports.

The couple shared a joint statement on Instagram, revealing that despite their efforts, their relationship couldn’t be salvaged.

“We tried, and it didn’t work, and that’s okay,” the statement read.

They expressed surprise at finding themselves in this situation, writing, “We’ve been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we’d be the couple announcing a breakup.”

The pair emphasised the importance of clarity and peace as they move forward in their lives separately.

They reflected on their relationship history, noting that they fell “madly in love in 2014” and initially broke up five years later.

They reunited in August 2023, giving their relationship one last attempt over the past year before deciding to part ways again.

“We were 21 and 20 when we first met—both at the beginning of our careers—and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately,” they said. This final attempt, they added, required a significant amount of “figuring out, relearning, and unlearning.”

Despite the breakup, Stormzy and Jama assured fans that they remain friends and still hold each other in high regard.

They requested that people respect their privacy and avoid making a fuss if they are seen together at events in the future.

“We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we’ve had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends,” they wrote.

The statement concluded with a plea for understanding: “We’re kindly asking for the grace to let both of us keep it moving and not be bothered about it (we highly doubt this’ll work, but we’re still kindly asking anyway). Love you guys and thank you for all the love you’ve showered us with, it’s been beautiful.”
