Three people have been sentenced to death by hanging by the Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife for killing a corps member, Mukaila Adebayo, during a robbery attack in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.

News About Nigeria reports that the three men who are the defendants in the matter were identified as Jelili Kareem, a herbal seller, Oludayo Oludele, a commercial motorcyclist, and Muyiwa Awodeji, an electrician.

According to reports, the three men had on January 28, 2020, conspired to rob Adebayo, who was a Corps member in the Omo West Area of Osogbo, of his mobile phone, recharge cards, and other valuables before taking his life.

During the trial, the prosecutor from the Ministry of Justice, Muyiwa Ogunleye, while addressing the court revealed that the daughter of the deceased was at the scene when Adebayo was shot dead by the defendants.

Ogunleye also called Adebayo’s 10-year-old daughter, the pathologist who performed an autopsy on the deceased, and the Investigative Police Officer that investigated the matter, as well as a sibling of the late Adebayo, to prove his case that Adebayo was indeed murdered by the defendants.

Delivering judgement on the matter today, the court held that the offences committed were contrary to and punishable under Sections 316, 319, and 324 of the Criminal Code Law. Cap.34, Vol. 2. Laws of State, 2002.

Justice Adedapo Adeniji in his judgement also held that the prosecution had proven that the defendants committed the crime and subsequently convicted three of them for murder and armed robbery.

Adeniji, thereafter, sentenced Kareem, Oludele and Awodeji to death by hanging.
