On Friday, the Kogi State House of Assembly extended the tenure of Transition Committee Chairmen by another six months.
News About Nigeria reports that the resolution to extend the tenure of the Chairmen by six months was reached by the hallowed chamber during the House plenary today (Friday).
The extension of the tenure of the Transition Committee Chairmen follows a letter sent to the House by the state governor, Ahmed Ododo.
In his letter to the Kogi State House of Assembly, the governor gave reasons why the local government elections cannot be conducted now in the state.
Giving details, Ododo noted that paucity of funds and high wage bills are some of the reasons.
The governor further emphasised that the financial challenges necessitated the postponement of the local government elections.
Reading the governor’s letter on the floor of the House on Friday, the Speaker, Umar Yusuf, who disclosed the extension of the tenure of the LG chairmen, tasked them to be good ambassadors of their respective local governments.
He said, “In the next six months, it will be interesting at the local government level as there will be mostly submission of reports to the Assembly. The Chairmen henceforth should take note of this.”
The tenure of the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen in Kogi would have come to an end on July 8, 2024.
However, following the approval by the House, the Transition Committee Chairmen are now expected to vacate their offices on the 8th of January, 2025 when local government elections will be duly conducted.
