The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the recent outbreak of violence in Rivers State, which resulted in the deaths of a police officer and a vigilante member.

News About Nigeria reports that this was contained in a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, on Wednesday.

Supporters of two political factions clashed at various Local Government Council secretariats, leading to the tragic deaths of Inspector David Mgbada and Samuel Nwigwe.

In response, the IGP has directed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olatunji Disu, to increase security measures and investigate the killings. Operatives from the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have been deployed to assist in apprehending the perpetrators.

The IGP warned individuals and groups responsible for attacks on police officers and security operatives to cease their actions, stating that the full force of the law will be applied.

The CP has been directed to focus on patrols, strategic deployment, and intelligence operations to prevent further violence and ensure resident safety.

The IGP extended condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased, noting that their dedication and sacrifice will not be taken for granted.

He urged residents and political stakeholders to exercise restraint and seek peaceful means of resolving differences.

Recall that following what they described as a “breakdown of law and order” at the various local government secretariats in Rivers State yesterday, the police have announced the temporary takeover of all 23 councils’ secretariats as well as critical government infrastructure in the state.
