The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has responded to the sudden resignation of Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George. Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Gusau expressed surprise and stated that he was not aware of Finidi’s resignation.
News About Nigeria reports that Finidi, who served as an assistant coach to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months before Peseiro’s voluntary departure after the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, reportedly resigned from his position on Saturday.
Finidi’s resignation follows the NFF’s announcement on Thursday that it would hire an “expatriate technical adviser” for the Super Eagles due to their underwhelming performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.
The team has managed to secure only three points out of a possible 12 and is currently fifth in the six-team Group C, jeopardizing their qualification prospects.
In light of the poor performance, some fans and supporters have called for both Finidi and the NFF board members to resign.
Sources indicate that Finidi’s discontent also stems from the NFF leadership’s recent meeting with the sports minister, during which they failed to address key issues.
These include the players reporting late to the training camp and the NFF’s lack of effort to mobilize Nigerian supporters in Ivory Coast for the match against Benin Republic last Monday.
Responding to the news of Finidi’s alleged resignation, Gusau noted that he had not yet received an official resignation letter from the coach.
“I am not aware of Finidi’s resignation,” Gusau said. “Until we receive an official communication from him, we cannot confirm his resignation.”
Finidi’s resignation, if confirmed, marks a significant shake-up in the Super Eagles’ coaching staff at a critical juncture in their World Cup qualification campaign.
The NFF’s decision to bring in a foreign technical adviser underscores the urgent need for a strategic overhaul as the team faces mounting pressure to improve its performance.
