Due to the ongoing nationwide strike by the organised labour, the federal government on Monday, through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), fixed tomorrow for meeting with the organised labour and the committee on the new national minimum wage.
News About Nigeria reported that the last meeting of the committee ended abruptly on May 31, 2024, after the organised labour negotiating team walked out following the government and organised private sector, OPS’s refusal to go beyond the N60,000 they had earlier offered.
According to the FG, the meeting with the organised labour will begin by 10 am tomorrow.
It was gathered that the emergency meeting is due to the fact that the FG is shocked by the level of compliance and participation by workers on the first day of the indefinite nationwide strike.
Recall that the nationwide strike was made known in a joint statement issued by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Festus Osifo on Friday.
In the statement, the organised labour noted that the strike became imperative following the Federal Government’s failure to finalise and enact a new National Minimum Wage Act and to reverse the increase in electricity tariffs to N65/kWh.
In line with the directive of the congress, several unions across the country obliged to express their grievance.
Unions that joined the strike today include, Aviation sector, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the National Union of Electricity Employees, National Union of Banks, Insurance.
Others are, Financial Institutions Employees, Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Joint Union Action Committee, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, National Associations of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives and Joint Health Sector Unions.
