The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency confirmed on Tuesday the deaths of six people following a building that collapsed in the Onitsha Area of the state.

The agency also revealed that about 20 other people were rescued from the collapsed building, most of whom sustained various levels of injuries and are currently in the hospital receiving treatment.

In the words of officials of SEMA, “About six bodies recovered from the rubbles have been deposited at the morgue, while those who sustained varying degrees of injuries were taken to the nearby hospital for medical attention, rescue efforts are still ongoing.”

News About Nigeria learned that the collapsed building was a three-storey building that was still under construction and was to serve as a market upon completion.

Also speaking during his visit to the Ochanje building, the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, commiserated with the families of the deceased while pledging that the injured would get proper medical attention.

Soludo also promised that he would ensure that the victims of the collapsed building received justice.

The governor, while expressing his displeasure, stated that those involved in the tragedy, including the developer, the chairman of the market, and every other person, will be prosecuted and jailed when the investigation is completed.

He also revealed that the remaining building under construction by the same developer, which is close to the collapsed building, will be demolished.

Governor Soludo further warned that any construction that is done in the market without his approval would also be demolished.
