PDP Confirms Wabara As BoT Chair, Says Nigeria’s Democracy In ‘Danger’

On Tuesday, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed the appointment of a former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, as substantive chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

News About Nigeria reported that a former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, was also appointed as the BoT Secretary to replace the former Minister of Special Duties, Kabir Turaki.

Speaking after his appointment at Wabara Plaza in Abuja, Wabara stated that democracy in Nigeria is in danger because, as a nation, Nigeria is heading towards one political party system.

He, however, noted that he believed that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy largely depends on the survival of the PDP.

Wabara, who accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the push for a one-party system in Nigeria, noted that the PDP would never allow that to happen.

According to him, the PDP is ready to frustrate the APC’s plot for a one-party system in Nigeria because they would fight to ensure that their party thrives and also destroy the agenda of the one-party system.

Wabara therefore charged members of the BoT to partner with him to ensure that the PDP does not die.

He said, “Our role as members of the Board of Trustees, the main organ of this party, is to ensure that this party does not die. If the PDP goes under, definitely democracy will go under in Nigeria. We know that there are plans to turn this country into a one-party state, but that will only happen when we allow it.

“So, we must fight for democracy in Nigeria, and it is only the PDP that can do that. Nobody owns this party, but other parties are owned.”
