A retired Colonel, Hassan Stan-Labo, has stated that the reason kidnapping and banditry thrive in the country is because government officials gain from it, News About Nigeria reports.

The Colonel made this known while speaking with newsmen, noting that kidnapping has now become a big-time business in Nigeria.

He noted that the country has been battling with banditry and kidnapping for the past ten (10) years, adding that there has been perfection to certain deals, whereby some individuals are just making their cool money out of this, including government officials.

According to him, there was a time when government officials were ready to release money from the Treasury to pay and release individuals because they had some cuts from such money.

He further stated that with the way banks in the country are declaring all sorts of huge profits, even when the economy is said to be in bad shape, it is likely that they are complicit in the business of kidnapping.

He added that banks are business enterprises and are concerned with profits, maintaining that they will cooperate and conceal whatever needs to be concealed to make their money.

Recall that in the past few weeks, several incidents of kidnappings have been reported in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with over 25 people taken away by suspected bandits who demanded huge ransoms for their release.

These kidnappings were seriously predominant in the North-West region but have now spread to other parts of the country, including Lagos, Ogun, Nasarawa, and Delta states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
