A fire broke out on Sunday at the 10-storey Mandilas Building situated on Broad Street, Lagos Island, News About Nigeria reports.

The inferno destroyed numerous items and properties, with estimated losses amounting to several million naira.

The incident, which occurred around 1:15 p.m., occurred when businesses were yet to commence operations for the day.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire started in a warehouse on the building’s first floor before quickly spreading to higher levels.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that there were no reported casualties in the incident.

Prompt response teams, including personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the police, and other emergency responders, were at the scene to combat the fire.

As of the latest update, the cause of the inferno remained undetermined, and rescue operations were ongoing at the site.

The affected traders, who later arrived at the scene, were observed salvaging whatever goods and valuable items they could retrieve from the engulfed building.

The extent of the damage caused by the fire is yet to be fully assessed, and investigations into the cause of the incident are underway.

In other news, News About Nigeria reported in October 2023 that the Federal Government announced its plans to rebrand and expand the scope of the Federal Fire Service.

This rebranding effort will also involve a change of name, transforming the agency into the Federal Fire and Rescue Service.

During the inauguration of 15 firefighting trucks and rapid response vehicles in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted the government’s vision for the rebranded service.

The Federal Fire and Rescue Service will not only focus on fire-related emergencies but will also be actively engaged in carrying out rescue-related duties.
