Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has denounced and apologised for the attack on Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Ajaero was beaten last week by those purportedly loyal to Uzodimma and collaborating with the Imo State Police command.

The Imo Police Command, on the other hand, refuted the account, alleging that Ajaero was taken in protective custody after receiving information of a planned mob attack on the union’s leader.

On Channels TV’s Politics Today on Thursday, Uzodimma said that while the attack on Ajaero is upsetting for him and the administration, he would never condone violence.

Along with offering an apology, the governor asked the NLC president to behave himself more politely.

“I had no idea that the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was visiting my state. I condemned the action that was taken against him. I have never disagreed with the labour union”, the governor said.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with my administration. I will not want this on any human being, whether Joe Ajaero is the NLC’s President or not. I also apologise to him because it happened in my state.

News About Nigeria reported that the governor affirmed that he is a devout Christian who has faith in God and cannot in any way support violence.

The governor stated that he could never justify violence. Whether it happened in his state or not

He went on to point out that what happened to the NLC president that led to the assault is regretted by both his government and himself.

“In the future, I’d like him to behave more civilly. That’s what I was attempting to say. A man from my state to walk down the street without first clearing me out, without first bringing all of the claims before me”, Hope Uzodimma stated.
