Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello suggests that it is better for the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government to embark on building road infrastructure than giving out palliatives to Nigerians.
Making this assertion while inspecting an ongoing construction at the Abuja-Lokoja expressway, the Kogi state governor said that fixing roads across the country will alleviate poverty.
“By fixing roads across the country, it will alleviate poverty and that is better than giving out palliatives,” Mr Bello said.
According to Governor Yahaya Bello, the Abuja- Lokoja road was vital to the socio-economic lives of the people as it links the southwest, south-south, and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the northern parts.
His comment comes as states continue to doll out palliative measures to cushion the impact of the recent removal of fuel subsidy on their citizens.
News About Nigeria recalled that President Tinubu earlier approved N5 billion for each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enable them to procure food items for distribution to the poor in their respective states.
The Federal Government also released five trucks of rice each to the 36 state governors.
His comments come shortly after Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum suggested that palliative measures were not enough to adequately address the hardship that Nigerians are currently facing as a result of the recent removal of fuel subsidy.
Recall that President Tinubu quickly eliminated fuel subsidies upon taking office. His action caused the price of fuel to rise at the pump, going from N189 to almost N600 per liter.
