The National Association of University Students (NAUS) is gearing up to embark on a protest over the hike in tuition fees, News About Nigeria reports.

NAUS Chairman, Eruobami Ayobami revealed this in a statement on Saturday.

He said the student group isn’t comfortable with the increase in school fees in most tertiary institutions across the country especially with the recent one, being UNILAG.

The University of Lagos reportedly raised fees for undergraduate students. They were paying N19,000 but now they will have to pay over a hundred thousand.

Also, the Federal Government increased the school fees for Unity Colleges. They were paying N45,000 but now they will have to pay a hundred thousand.

The NAUS said they are disappointed with these actions, especially given the current economic challenges the nation is facing.

They lamented that the standard of education in Nigeria is reducing day by day. These incessant increments will only worsen it.

According to NAUS, if Nigeria truly cherishes its education system and wants the best for the students, it will do everything possible to ease the problems that come along with it.

The student body made it clear that they are prepared to stage a mass protest against any enactment that endorses tuition increment.

Why We Increased Tuition Fees by Over 500% – UNILAG

Meanwhile, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, revealed why it increased its tuition fees.

Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola said the school fees remained unchanged for over twenty years.

But, due to the negative effects of the fuel subsidy removal, the price managing education materials have soared.

Previously, undergraduate students were paying N19,000, but the management has now set new fees based on the specific courses.

Students pursuing medicine will now have to pay N190,250, while those enrolled in courses with laboratory and studio requirements are expected to pay N140,250.

For programmes that do not involve labs or studios, the fees are fixed at N100,750.
