A destructive flood wreaked havoc in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, following an intense downpour on the evening of Sunday, July 16.
News About Nigeria gathered that the torrential rain, which persisted for over an hour, caused extensive damage in various parts of the state capital. Distressed residents were witnessed evacuating their belongings from their homes.
The Gengeri Megamu area was particularly affected, as numerous roads became submerged under the deluge, rendering them impassable for motorists.
Alhaji Malami, a resident, described the situation as terrible, noting that many individuals suffered substantial property losses due to the heavy rainfall.
“The state government is well aware that such incidents have been transpiring for years, yet no action has been taken to address the persistent issue of flooding in the area,” he expressed, voicing his disappointment.
He also mentioned that the majority of the affected areas are prone to waterlogging, and the absence of properly constructed drainage systems exacerbates the problem.
Blaming both the state government and the residents, Malami pointed out that individuals had constructed their homes in waterways, thereby inviting the wrath of floods that have plagued the area in previous years.
Calling on the state government, he insisted that comprehensive strategies be promptly devised to prevent future flooding in the region.
Mrs. Okoye, another flood victim, shared her heart-wrenching experience of losing some of her belongings. She lamented that while she was preoccupied with ensuring the safety of her children, her husband was away at work, leaving her to cope with the situation alone.
She expressed regret that they were unable to salvage more of their possessions.
