President Bola Tinubu has taken the decision to indefinitely suspend Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), News About Nigeria reports.
The suspension aims to allow for a thorough investigation into allegations of misconduct that have been raised against Bawa during his time in office.
Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has issued a formal statement clarifying that the accusations against Bawa are substantial in nature, relating to the improper use of his position of power.
According to the statement, Bawa has been instructed to immediately hand over his responsibilities to the Director of Operations within the Commission.
Until the investigation is completed, the Director of Operations will take on the responsibility of supervising the Chairman’s tasks.
The Director of Operations in the EFCC is Mohammed Umar Abba.
Abba, born on June 22, 1965, in the Tudunwada Local Government Area of Kano State, obtained his first degree from Bayero University in Kano.
After completing his one-year national service at the former Anambra State Police Command, he joined the Nigeria Police Force. He attended the Nigeria Police Academy in Kaduna State and received his commission in 1992.
In January 2016, CP Abba was assigned to the Commission and assumed the role of heading the Counterterrorism and General Investigations (CTGI) Section at the headquarters in Abuja. In 2017, he was appointed as the Director of Operations for the Commission.
He held this position until 2020 when he took over as the acting Chairman, succeeding Ibrahim Magu. He served in this capacity until his return to the Police force.
