ASUU Re-elects National President

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke has been re-elected as the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for an additional two-year term.

News About Nigeria reports that this unanimous decision was made during the 22nd National Delegates Conference of ASUU, which took place at the University of Jos, Plateau State, from May 19 to 21, 2023.

Professor Osodeke, who is affiliated with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, emerged as the sole candidate for the position.

His re-election signifies the union’s confidence in his leadership and his commitment to the welfare and interests of university staff.

In addition to the National President, Chris Piwuna, an esteemed Consultant Psychiatrist and Associate Professor from the College of Medicine at the University of Jos, was also re-elected as the Vice President.

This decision highlights the members’ recognition of Piwuna’s expertise and his dedication to the union’s objectives.

The conference witnessed the re-election of other influential individuals in ASUU’s national leadership. Professor Siji Sowande retained his position as Treasurer, Professor Ade Adejumo continued serving as Financial Secretary, and Dr Austen Sado retained the position of Investment Secretary.

Dr Adamu Babayo also maintained his role as Internal Auditor. Furthermore, Dr Aisha Bawa was elected as the new Welfare Secretary, taking over from Dr Stella-Maris Okey.

This re-election process serves as an affirmation of the union’s commitment to maintaining a strong and united leadership, working collectively towards addressing the challenges faced by the academic staff in universities across the country.

It also emphasizes the union’s dedication to upholding the welfare, rights, and interests of its members.
