Governor of Anambra State and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, has warned that salaries of workers who refuse to show up for work on sit-at-home days in the state will be slashed, News About Nigeria reports.
Speaking at the May Day celebration held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the governor said that the Monday sit-at-home had become an excuse for workers to stop coming to work on Mondays and that this could no longer be tolerated.
Soludo had recently increased workers’ salaries by 10 percent.
However, he argued that workers could not be earning full salaries for working only four days a week.
The governor stated that workers would be paid proportionally to the number of days they work.
He also warned that salaries would be reduced if workers failed to show up on Mondays.
Soludo revealed that the state government had been running a budget deficit of N88 billion for the past year.
He explained that the 2023 budget had been based on N4 billion internally generated revenue every month, but the state had only been able to generate N2 billion.
Furthermore, the state was supposed to be receiving N5bn from the federal government, but this amount had been reduced.
Soludo called on workers to work harder to generate revenue for the government so that the state’s pressing issues and workers’ welfare could be taken care of.
The governor acknowledged that there was pressure on him to increase salaries and downsize the workforce.
He urged labour leaders to study the proposal.
Soludo stressed that the state government was committed to taking care of the welfare of workers, but they had to play their part by being diligent and showing up for work.
