Premier League legend Sergio Aguero has insisted that Barcelona did not do enough to get Lionel Messi back to Spain, News About Nigeria reports.
Aguero on Saturday disclosed that dumping Barcelona for Inter Miami was not totally Messi’s primary intention as the player had hoped for a return to his boyhood club towards the end of last season.
“Messi’s decision? Barcelona did not do enough for Leo’s return,” he said
The Manchester City ace who played alongside Messi in Argentina’s national team during his active career, said Messi made the right decision by choosing his own path early enough, rather than waiting for a deal that may not happen.
He however noted the financial constraints of the Spanish giants but hoped they could have pushed more to make the reunion happen.
“Yes, there was a La Liga thing and also the economic situation, but Leo made the correct decision to not wait until the last second like he did in 2021.”
Aguero who maintains a cordial relationship with the seven-time world best player also revealed that Messi might be faced with the crucial challenge of dragging Inter Miami out of the mud, pointing to their standings in Major League Soccer.
“I spoke to Messi yesterday, I sent him a message with a screenshot of the Eastern Conference standings and I said: ‘Your team is behind! You have to move up to 8th or 9th!'”
He continued that Messi saw the funny side of the message laughing, before admitting that the club which is co-owned by fellow football icon David Beckham, must make the play-offs.
